Code Name: Episode 1c Password Security – We are sorry that the show is so short but this show is the second take of the show. I used Audacity to record the show and it crashed in the middle of recording, so I tried to us the recovery tools and that failed. So we just redid the show using Mac audio recorder this is a great program for recording a podcast. Anyways we just did not have enough time to put a full show together. Since were in a time constraint we skipped a lot of content but I have gone ahead and place all the content below. Our guest for this episode is CPU Scott.

- PCs Cost More than Macs (Duh!) - Compare Apple's dual G5 to the top of the line Dell dual Xeon Precision workstation and the PC has most of the features but costs a thousand bucks more than the Mac. The two lines are closer to even in the midrange, where the Apple 15-inch PowerBook? is only about US$180 cheaper than the nearest comparable Dell 15-inch Inspiron.
- Getting All 1,700 Parts of the Xbox 360 to Market - Starting Tuesday, millions of videogame fans are expected to flock to stores to buy Microsoft Corp.'s new Xbox 360 game machine. It is up to Todd Holmdahl to see that they don't leave empty-handed.
- Hyperthreading Hurts Server Performance? - ZDNet? is reporting that enabling Intel's new Hyperthreading Technology on your servers could lead to markedly decreased performance, according to some developers who have been looking into problems that have been occurring since HT has been shipping automatically activated. One MS developer from the SQL server team put it simply: 'Our customers observed very interesting behaviour on high-end HT-enabled hardware. They noticed that in some cases when high load is applied SQL Server CPU usage increases significantly but SQL Server performance degrades.' Another developer, this time from Citrix, was just as blunt. 'It's ironic. Intel had sold hyperthreading as something that gave performance gains to heavily threaded software. SQL Server is very thread-intensive, but it suffers. In fact, I've never seen performance improvement on server software with hyperthreading enabled. We recommend customers disable it.'"
- Sony offers MP3s in replacement for rootkit CDs - Wow -- Sony is not only offering to replace its rootkit CDs? with non-rootkit CDs?; they're also offering to provide MP3s? of all the music on the CDs? to the people who bought them. I wonder if the MP3s? carry watermarks? Also -- note that they're offering to replace the discs with non-rootkit DRM discs, but not promising that some other DRM won't be present. We already know that Sony uses lots of different techniques to cripple its CDs?.
- Sony root kit remover from sophos - This version of the tool detects and disables the Sony DRM cloaking copy protection technology (which Sophos refers to as RKProc?-Fam) It also detects and disables other Trojans, including the Troj/Stinx variants Troj/Stinx-E and Troj/Stinx-F, which are stealthed by RKProc?-Fam.
- iTunes creates a security hole? - A security research company has reported that Apple's iTunes software creates vulnerabilities in Windows XP and Mac OS X that allow remote parties to install and execute code on your computer -- basically, the vulnerability means that your computer can be taken over by an attacker who can then hijack your connection, your files, and your privacy.
- 2005 "10 Worst Toys" List - World Against Toys Causing Harm (WATCH), a consumer watchdog org, has published a list of its ten most dangerous Xmas-season toys. I have to say that they all seem pretty mild compared to the stuff I used to play with, though it is interesting to note how hypocritical the manufacturers' advice can be as with the Fantastic 4 Thing gauntlets
- Judge to Lego - Your patent has expired, get over it - The Canadian Supreme Court has ruled that it's lawful for a Montreal company to make blocks that work with Lego bricks. Decades ago, Lego sought and received a Canadian patent for its blocks. The patent did what it was supposed to do: it protected Lego's invention for a limited time, and then it expired, so that anyone could make compatible products. That's the patent bargain: in exchange for asking the government to keep your competitors at bay, you agree to let the public copy your invention for free when the period of exclusivity is expired.
